Unexpected Garden workshop call out

Lyth Arts Centre is looking to commission local artists and creatives to deliver workshops as part of our Unexpected Garden.

Part of Dandelion 2022, the Caithness Unexpected Garden is a travelling, growing, workshop and performance space built on the back of a trailer. Whilst growing a mixture of vegetables, herbs and flowers the garden will travel to four sites across Caithness sparking conversations about where our food comes from, how it’s transported, and try some experimental approaches to cultivating vegetables.

As part of this, we want to work with local artists to programme a series of inspiring and exciting workshops for a range of audiences and participants.

We’re looking for short proposals from artists and creatives based in Caithness & North Sutherland to design and deliver these activities.

– We are looking for original and unique ideas inspired by themes of growing, food, plants, nature, environment and community

– The activity should be around 60 – 90 minutes

– The activity will need to take place at or near the Unexpected Garden (so might be outside at the garden or in a nearby village hall or school)

– Keep your proposals as inclusive as possible

Take a look at the Unexpected Garden page to see how the project is developing.

The garden will be in John O’Groats, Lybster, Wick and Thurso – think about local inspiration and materials.

You can also view some of our past and current workshop programmes.

As you can see, there were lots of different styles. We are open to pretty much any creative medium just as long as it works for participants. We recommend staying true to your own artistic style, and letting your imagination run wild. We’ll be looking for a balance of activities, for all ages and abilities.

The fee for each agreed workshop is £164.  We have calculated this at 4 hours x £41 (Scottish Artists union hourly rate), based on 2 hours planning and 2 hours delivery.

We have approximately 20 sessions available.

Open call opens: Tuesday 10th May

Deadline for completing and submitting this form: Friday 20th May (midday)

We will let you know if you have been successful by Monday 23 May

The garden will start touring later this month:
