Konrad Wiszniewski and Euan Stevenson’s New Focus is one of the most appealing, most beautifully realised projects to emerge on the Scottish jazz scene in recent years.
Originally conceived as a fiftieth anniversary tribute to saxophone giant Stan Getz’s 1961 classic album, Focus, the group has developed a style all of its own, showcasing Scottish National Jazz Orchestra saxophone star Wiszniewski’s ravishing tone and inventive, soulfully communicative playing and Stevenson’s elegant, coolly considered pianism in compositions that ooze melodic richness and possess a flowing, cinematic quality.
In duo performances, as here, Wiszniewski and Stevenson have an understanding that makes the saxophone and keyboard instrumentation sound and feel like a bigger ensemble. They’ll feature music from their recently released second album, New Focus On Song, as well as its Scottish Album of the Year-shortlisted predecessor and a few refreshed jazz standards, creating superbly accessible, hauntingly memorable jazz for the 21st century.
This show is accompanied by a workshop at 2pm. A combined ticket for the show and workshop is £25.
The workshop will help with frontline and rhythm section skills and technical playing skills with two of the UK’s leading jazz players, saxophonist Konrad Wiszniewski and pianist Euan Stevenson, award-winning musicians individually and co-leaders of the widely acclaimed New Focus. As well as their work with New Focus, Konrad Wiszniewski is a long established member of the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra and Euan Stevenson has worked internationally as a pianist, arranger and accompanist.
