Mark Steel is one of Britain's top stand-up comedians. He is regular on panel shows such as the BBC's Have I Got News For You, QI, Mock the Week and Radio 4's Newsquiz. He has also published several books and writes a weekly column for The Independent.

An active social and political campaigner, he was a member of the Socialist Workers Party until 2007 and has appeared several times on the BBC's Question Time. His comedy is informed by his left-wing politics, often combining history and current events with an incisive comic instinct for the absurd.

Mark Steel's In Town is a series which celebrates the quirks of small-town life in a country of increasingly homogenised high streets. Each show is painstakingly researched, drawing on local history, politics, tourist brochures, current events and, yes, good old-fashioned stereotypes, to create material unique to each town he visits. Steel's observations on the small, sometimes forgotten, towns of Britain go right to the heart of British culture today, championing the very people who shape the places we live in now.

"Consistently the funniest programme on the radio." (The Independent on Sunday )
