Box Club - Ashton LaneScottish Folk Box Club in concert – Sunday, 19th Sept. 8pm, 2 hours including interval, age 11+

After their sell-out show at Lyth last year Box Club return with another exhilarating evening ignited by four excellent young accordion players, bursting with energy, talent and enthusiasm. The "box" players are: Mairearad Green, Gary Innes, Angus Lyon and John Somerville accompanied by Duncan Lyall (bass), Mike Bryan (guitar) and Martin O'Neill (Bodhran/kit).

They all met through the vibrant Glasgow music scene and have a shared appreciation of the wonders of the accordion. Gary, Mairearad and John came upon the idea while teaching at a residential music week in the Highlands. They all saw the opportunity to showcase the versatility of the accordion along with the vibrancy and energy of the Scottish music scene. Each with their own distinctive style of playing, the accordionists saw it as a challenge to create a new and original sound.

All members of the band have played at venues and festivals all over the world and worked with bands and artists such as Paul Macartney, David Byrne, Cat Stevens, Karine Polwart, Salsa Celtica, Dochas, Flook, Brolum, the Gary Innes band, Croft No Five and the Anna Massie band.

Box Club’s music draws much from the members traditional roots as well as their vast musical influences and experiences of recent years. A lot of the music is self composed and features everything from driving reels to lovely Scottish airs.

I thought I would just let you know how much we enjoyed the ‘Box Club’ last Sunday. The music was fantastic and the enthusiasm of the group infectious. What a shame that they don’t play much now.
