The ancient folklore tradition of ‘buying the wind’ was common across Caithness and the fishing routes of the North Atlantic. The tradition involved sailors purchasing 3 knots of thread, rope or fabric, to be undone as wind is required, but the mariner is instructed on no account to untie the third knot, as it may start a hurricane.
Inspired by this ancient tradition, LAC has collaborated with renowned local artist Joanne B Kaar to create a unique, interactive, festive family Winter Exhibition.
Children and their families are invited into the arts centre to make a Christmas wish on the wind. The wind-spinners with your wishes will be tied to a ‘wishing tree’ in the LAC garden, decorated in twinkling lights, ready for the wind to take them out into the universe. The windspinners are made from bottles collected on Caithness beach cleans.
