The course will be a study in the use of Grisaille or underpainting in the construction and development of a finished painted image. Grisaille is a traditional approach to developing form in a painting using only shades of a neutral colour creating a monochromatic image.
This “underpainting” can then be painted over in washes of colour. The technique has been in use for many hundreds of years and was practiced by artists such as Giotto, Rembrandt, Titian and Caravaggio.
