Young Peoples Mental Health and Wellbeing: Beginning the Conversation

A new drama and film project for young people in Caithness, exploring mental health and well-being’

Hi everyone, my name is Donna Swanson. I am an actor, experienced drama facilitator and educator, born and based in Thurso. For many years I have worked with the Caithness community – supporting local groups and working alongside other professionals too.  My time working in drama has also seen me work outside of the county. One of my main passions is the creation of new theatre and film and with the help of Lyth Arts Centre’s CAIR programme, I am excited to be developing a new project.

What is the project: Over the coming months I would like to collaborate with young people in Caithness – using the medium of theatre and film – to explore Children’s Mental Health and Wellbeing.  Ultimately, creating a documentary to aid and inform others about the subject of Children’s Mental Health and Wellbeing.

Who can be involved:  Are you in High School? Do you have an interest in drama, theatre or film? Do you care about mental health within our community and beyond? Do you want to be involved in a project that will help people in Caithness? Do you want to learn theatre and film techniques? If you answered YES to any of the above keep reading…

Where: Due to the current restrictions, I plan to begin this project by forming a working group. Using a virtual platform, our group will meet weekly to develop ideas, discuss the project and learn techniques for stage and screen.

Why: Children’s Mental Health and Wellbeing is an issue that lacks a voice within our community and beyond. More than ever it’s vital that we help those voices to be heard and to be supported.  Working together, and using the medium of film, our aim will be to raise awareness and get supportive messages out into the public domain.

When: NOW!  I would love you to join our group. If you would like to be involved please do not hesitate to get in touch. Involvement can be as much or as little as you like. Although the subject we are exploring if one of great importance, this project will be fun and rewarding.

If you are aged between 12 and 17 and would like to get involved, please fill out the contact form below and I will be in touch with you as soon as possible. Please note that any involvement in the project would be absolutely free.
