Summer Exhibition Events

LAC has a jam-packed Summer ahead with events for all the family. As well as our series of Summer Session gigs at village halls across the county, there will be special events bringing Mountains Underwater: Stroma exhibition to life. Have a read below to see what’s coming up!

 

Sunday 7 July – Sound Walk

Duncansby Head (2pm) – Free but booking essential

An interactive sound walk with our Summer Exhibition Artists. After the sound walk, which could last from 30 minutes to an hour, we will have a period of discussion to ask questions and reflect on the experience. Please wear sensible shoes and clothing ready for the Caithness weather!

Meet at Duncansby Head Lighthouse Car Park at 2pm (capacity 15)

 

Thursday 11 July – Thursday Lates

Lyth Arts Centre (4pm – 10pm)

No special event this evening, but the bar will be open until 10pm!

Alan Bisset : The Moira Monologues, 8pm

Lyth Arts Centre

£10 – Booking required

Meet Moira Bell, the hardest woman in Falkirk, ‘the most charismatic character to appear on a Scottish stage in a decade’ (The Scotsman) and the star of Alan Bissett’s ‘one woman show’. Whether defending her wee dog Pepe from the local Rottweiler, attempting to seduce a teacher, or belting out Diana Ross for the Scotia karaoke night, Moira is hilarious, hypnotic, frightening and heart-warming company.

Folk band Balter play at Lyth Hall as part of our Summer Sessions. The exhibition will be open for you to check out before the gig and enjoy a drink before heading to up the Hall. With support from local band Na Cailegan.

Join LAC Associate Artist Alex Patience for a special work in progress sharing during her residency. No booking required.

 

Thursday 1 August – Stroma Stories @ Thursday Lates

Lyth Arts Centre (7.30pm)

Join local Stroma enthusiast Jayden Alexander for an evening exploring the history of Stroma. With tales from former Stroma residents including author Catherine Byrne, this will be an evening to discover some of the secrets of the island. No booking required

 

Saturday 3 August – Stroma Stories: Wick Heritage Centre

Wick Heritage Museum (1pm – 3pm)

Join local experts from Wick Heritage for a special talk exploring the history of Stroma. No booking required

 

Thursday 8 August – Synaesthesia Art Workshop @ Thursday Lates

Lyth Arts Centre (6pm)

Synaesthesia Art Workshop with Mara and Tyler – do you feel inspired when you listen to music? Well now is your chance to put pen or paintbrush to paper with guidance from professionals! Mara and Tyler will talk about synaesthesia and then apply the learning by listening to a playful electroacoustic composition whilst drawing or painting. No booking required.

Lyth Family Festival, 10am – 4pm

Join us for a weekend of family fun at Lyth Arts Centre this Summer! With outdoor circus, bush craft, story telling, arts & crafts workshops and the puppet caravan there is sure to be something for everyone at Lyth Family Festival! The festival is suitable for all agesand there’s lots of fun activities to keep the kids – and big kids – occupied.

Thursday 22 August – Artist Talk (Ellis O’Connor) @ Thursday Lates

Lyth Arts Centre (8pm)

Taking part in a residency at LAC, Ellis O’Connor is Contemporary Landscape Artist and Visit Scotland Ambassador. Based on North Uist, join Ellis for a special Artist Talk where she will discuss her work and her immersive process. No booking required

 

Thursday 29 August – Making Waves Workshop with Haven House Art @ Thursday Lates

Lyth Arts Centre (6pm)

£10 – Booking required – 15 capacity

Inspired by the themes of Mountains Underwater, join local artist Lisa Weller as she takes you through a seascape master class. In this one off workshop you will be able to recreate one of her most popular wave paintings, ‘Essence’. Lisa will guide you through a step by step process in acrylics that will enable you to either discover painting for the first time, or improve your existing painting skills.

Saturday 31 August – Stroma by Roddy Ritchie, Alistair Murray, George Gunn

Lyth Arts Centre (1pm – 3pm)

Published in 2011, this collaborative book by photographer Roddy Ritchie, local poet George Gunn and writer Ali Murray captures the turbulent history of Stroma and gives a though provoking insight into what the future could hold for the island. Join the authors for a discussion and reading of select works from the collection. Books will be available to purchase. No booking required.
