Mike Vass In The Wake of Neil Gunn October 11, 2014

We are delighted to host another Creative Scotland commissioned tour with nine musicians on stage using music and projected imagery to recreate an historical event – writer Neil Gunn’s 1937 voyage around the west coast of the Highlands, re-explored by composer Mike Vass.

In 1937, Caithness-born Neil Gunn sold his house and quit his job at the Customs Office in Inverness to pursue his writing career full time. The first thing he did with his new found freedom was buy a boat in the North of Skye and spend a summer sailing Scotland’s beautiful West Coast, seeking inspiration for his writing.

‘In the Wake of Neil Gunn’ is a Creative Scotland Traditional Arts Commission that sees Mike Vass, described as ‘one of the most original composers working in the field of acoustic music’ (Richard Lindsay), create a new suite inspired by his own voyage in May 2014 mirroring Gunn’s 1937 odyssey. The music celebrates Scotland’s coastal communities, the inspirational joy of sailing, and Neil Gunn’s outstanding contribution to Scottish literature. Mike expertly blends traditional, classical and electronic influences to create and immersive sonic pallet. He will be joined by some of Scotland’s finest musicians, including the Cairn String Quartet, Innes Watson, Hamish Napier, Jennifer Port and Euan Burton, to launch his ground-breaking new album.

One Response to Mike Vass In The Wake of Neil Gunn

  1. Donald says:

What a wonderful concert of inspiring music and joyful playing by Mike Vass and musicians. Sound as if they,ve had a hoot of a time on this tour and all really enjoy what they are playing. Evocative atmospheric and playful pieces with some video and footage from the original journey round the Western Isles. We all loved it in the full house – yet again – at Lyth. Congratulations to all the musicians and the crew at Lyth.
