Kevin, one of Scotland's top jazz guitarists, presents his new quartet featuring Julian Argüelles on saxophones, Alyn Cosker on drums and Tom Lyne on bass. Following the band's success at last year's London Jazz Festival they are touring to launch their album Chiasmus. During the hour-long interval a buffet will be served in the Foyer.
Kevin is a superb guitarist with a foot in both folk and jazz camps and is much in demand. On his latest CD, Chiasmus, he is definitely in jazz mode. This set of original compositions is his first work since the nine-piece Creative
Scotland Award project in '04.
"He weaves his characteristically fluent lines through the spacious textures of the music in intricate and imaginative fashion and Argüelles is an ideal foil on both tenor and soprano saxes, underpinned by Cosker's supple, propulsive
drumming." (Kenny Mathieson, The List)
After their memorable performance at Lyth last year we are pleased to welcome back the Frank Harrison piano trio with drummer Stephen Keogh and bass player Michael Coady for what is sure to be another spell-binding performance – the jazz piano trio format at its most lyrical.
Frank Harrison has been winning prizes since he started playing piano aged eleven. He studied at Berklee School Of Music, Boston before returning to England where he joined Gilad Atzmon's band, the Orient House Ensemble with whom he has recorded four CDs. Since his last outstanding appearance at Lyth last year he has released a fine new album, "You've Changed" with guitarist Louis Stewart.
Many of the visiting musicians will take part in that day's workshops which start with Stephen Keogh's Pulse Class. There will be options to join improvisation sessions and instrument master classes in an exciting day open to musicians of any age/degree of musical ability. No doubt some, if not all, the workshop participants will also end up on stage that evening to round off another Lyth Jazz Exchange.
Stephen Keogh is the leading light of the Global Music Foundation, an international jazz school which operates short courses in several European countries. There will be masterclasses in piano, guitar, saxophone, bass and percussion as well as general sessions on jazz improvisation. The day begins with Stephen's Pulse Class which is a must for musicians of any age/ability.
