A love story. A war story. A microcosm of our time.
Dogstar Theatre presents The Sky is Safe a new work and personal response to the Syrian tragedy created by writer Matthew Zajac and director Ben Harrison, makers of the multi-award winning play The Tailor of Inverness.
A play about identity and power, choice and its absence, beauty, brutality and survival focusing on two individuals driven by geopolitics, war, hunger, self-gratification and love.
Amal is a Syrian refugee, Gordon a privileged westerner from northern Europe. They meet on the opulent streets and shadowy alleys of Taksim, the commercial heart of Istanbul. What follows is a dream-like dance, an impossible meeting where these two acknowledge and ignore the barriers between them. The anonymity of the metropolis and their own transience allows them to reinvent themselves, though in reality, they can’t escape who they are or what they represent.
This tragic, funny and poetic play comes from the streets of Istanbul and from recent interviews with Syrian women rebuilding their lives in the city.
